Archie’s Return

I have a confession to make, when I was a kid, I was obsessed with Archie Comics. I’d like to think of myself as a voracious reader, talking true literature, but there was a time in my life when all I wanted to read was Archie Comics (I also went through a Sweet Valley High phase, don’t judge…). Every time we were at the grocery store I would beg my parents to buy me one. What a genius marketing ploy to put them at grocery store checkout counters, do they still do that?

So of course I was a little intrigued when I heard that they were making a show for Netflix. Then a little while later I read an article that the show was actually pretty good. Finally, the nail in the coffin, home by myself on a Friday night, wondering what to watch on Netflix. Lo and behold, Netflix thought it’d be something I’d be interested in, apparently since I’d watched Gilmore Girls.

Somehow, five episodes later, I was hooked. Yes I realize that I’m admitting that I spent my Friday night alone watching a teen television drama. To be honest they had me at ‘teen Outlander’.

I went into watching the show with no particular expectations which were quickly exceeded. Of course there are the typical elements of every teen drama, good looking young people, ridiculous drama that wouldn’t likely happen , or at least not all at once, and smart fast-talking dialogue which let’s be honest is not how teenagers actually speak. Beyond that though, the show was extremely well done. The casting is good, and they’re brought Archie in the 21st century. There’s actually a few characters of colour, and there’s a gay guy, when did that happen? One of my friends, who is apparently significantly more of an Archie fan than I am informed me that Kevin Keller has apparently existed in the comics for the last few years.

They’ve been very smart about the show, in my opinion, there’s a bit of a vampy, gothic feel to it that makes it seem less teen drama. They’ve retained enough Archie-ness to make the fans happy but taken it in a different direction to allow for a bit more depth and reality. And they’ve thrown in a lot of chirpy, quick dialogue with funny cultural references. Maybe that’s why they thought I’d like it if I watched Gilmore Girls.

Any Archie fans out there I definitely recommend that you give it a watch.

I was also obsessed with Archie comics growing up and I’m glad to hear the show is still honoring its roots. I can’t wait to watch it now I’ve only heard good things so far. Great post!
