Pregnancy Update: Weeks 20 and 21, plus Gender Reveal!

As you can see I’ve been keeping a pregnancy journal just for myself and I’m a little behind on my updates for the blog, I’m 22 + 5 as I write this post. I’m hoping to continue this journal as a baby book once the baby arrives, and yes I know my writing is illegible, my partner Greg tells me that all the time! I’m not super artistic, but I’m inspired by all the amazing bullet journal artists there are out there, do a search for bullet journal (or ‘bujo’) on Instagramm or Pinterest and you’ll see what I mean!

I’m excited to announce that we’re having a little girl! I’m very excited and even though I’m not particularly girly I seem to be drawn to all the cute baby girl outfits, hair bows, and accessories. We didn’t do a gender reveal or anything like that but I wanted to have time to tell everyone before I posted it on the blog. I was way too impatient to know what we were having to wait for a party to find out. It’s nice to be able to refer to our baby girl by her name rather than just ‘baby’. We have decided not to share the name though until after she’s born (not even with our family) partly because I just don’t really want to hear people’s opinions, and partly just because it feels like bad luck somehow. Since we do refer to her by her name in private there is a good chance we may slip up, but we’ll see. In Vietnam, where we lived briefly, it’s actually considered bad luck to name your baby until they are a year old (I could be wrong on the timing of this, if you know, let me know!)

Baby Size: Banana + Endive (based on length I believe)

Symptoms: The thing that’s probably affecting me the most right now is insomnia. The last couple of weeks it really has been getting bad. It’s very strange, I will feel tired but as soon as I lie down to go to sleep I feel wide awake again. I haven’t had any back or hip pain while sleeping, or restless legs, it just feels like I spend the whole night awake staring at the ceiling. I know I must be sleeping since I’m not exhausted, but it feels like I’m awake for hours at a time. I never wake up with that nice rested feeling. Maybe this is my body getting me ready for having a newborn.

Other than that it’s the same ol’ digestive complaints. I think it’s gotten slightly better since I’ve mostly cut out dairy again but I can’t always tell how much of my belly is baby, and how much is bloating. My skin is also super dry at the moment, including my scalp which is really itchy all the time now. I don’t think I’ve changed any of my hair products recently so I think it’s just dry skin. I do generally have dry skin though, so maybe I’ve just forgotten how bad it usually gets in winter and it’s not pregnancy related at all.

Not sure if this is a ‘symptom’ per say but I’ve definitely been feeling the baby move around a lot more lately. Pretty much every night now, either as I’m heading to bed or before I get up in the morning I’ll feel her move around. She’s definitely getting bigger and stronger, what started as tiny little pokes have become distinctive movements. She’s given me a few thumps as well that have startled me, not painful, just surprising when you’re not expecting it. I don’t think I’ve felt any hiccups yet, although I’m not sure exactly what that’ll feel like, and I haven’t seen my belly actually move around which’ll be weird. Lot’s of exciting things to come.

Weight Gain and Baby Bump: I’ve gained another 3 lbs since my last update so around 6 lbs total now, the weight gain seems to be at a steady pace now. I think my stomach has popped out a little bit now as well, although I still don’t have a cute little round belly like some girls get.

Is it just me, or does my smile in this photo look a bit evil? Thanks to my lovely cousin Mary I now have a few more maternity clothing pieces including this grey top. Although she’s a bit smaller than me so I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to wear them for, I’m spilling out the top a bit!

Exercise: I’ve been a bit better about exercising these last few weeks and I actually went to my first ever Barre class. It was great, I could do most of the class except for the abs part at the end, but the instruction helped me with some modifications. I used to go to classes at the gym before I got pregnant but have been sort of nervous since I wasn’t sure exactly what I can and can’t do (my gym doesn’t have any prenatal classes and I don’t really want to pay extra to go somewhere else). I was there the other day though and they had a mommy and baby class happening (one time only unfortunately *sigh*) and started chatting with the instructor who encouraged me to try one. So I went to the Barre class and it was great, I actually tried to go back to the same one this week but I was to slow to sign up, apparently you have to be really on the ball for these things! (shout out to Derek at Equinox Yorkville for being awesome!)

Buying for Baby: I managed to refrain from buying any baby stuff on black Friday and mostly just bought Christmas presents for people, maybe I’ll regret that later. I’m trying to focus on getting through Christmas first before I start registering or buying a lot. My mom is hosting a shower for me and I’m thinking late January will be the best time. I’ll be like 31-32 weeks by that point so not too far away from my due date, but hopefully not too huge/tired yet either. I’m thinking I’ll use Babylist for my registry since it allows you to pick items from multiple sites. A few people I know used Babies’R’Us but it’s a bit unclear right now what’s going on with the whole bankruptcy thing. Any mamas out there, what did you do for your registry/shower?

I’m into full on Christmas mode now, I’m loving everything holiday themed and I’m getting excited for holiday markets and activities. I’m also going on a little long weekend holiday to Florida in a few weeks and I’m excited for some sunshine. Does it count as a babymoon if I’m going with my partner and my mom? What about you all, what sort of holiday activities are you excited for?

Such a cute little bump! After we registered I heard some places (like Amazon and Target) supposedly give you a little goody bag for using them for your registry…might be worth looking into!

Congrats! For the dry skin I HIGHLY recommend Bio Oil. The dryness and itchiness only get more intense (I’m 34 weeks and it’s killer) but this stuff is the only thing I’ve tried which provides a decent amount of relief. Good luck with the insomnia too. Warm baths or showers right before bed sometimes help 🙂

Congrats on a baby girl, so fun! I totally agree with your decision not to reveal her name ahead of time. With both of our kids, we just didn’t want to deal with family opinions about names we’d already decided we were in love with.

This is so sweet and I *love* the bullet journal. I feel the same way, I can’t draw for my life and didn’t do a bujo for a long time because of that, but I’ve since been like – who cares, I’m giving it a shot, and it is so fun! The round belly is totally on the way. I’m long in the torso as well so I had that elongated preggo belly for a few months but by week 30, it was the ol basketball under the shirt look ; )

True, if it’s just for you it doesn’t really matter what it looks like, people make some amazing ones though! As for the belly, I’m sure I’ll complain about it once I actually have a giant one.

Hey congrats… happy to hear you will be parenting a girl. My husband too wants a girl child. Anyways, for helping you sleep, why don’t you get a pregnancy massage from your husband. I have a book that illustrates it well- The encyclopedia of Aromatherapy, Massage and Yoga by Carole McGilvery, Jimi Reed and Mira Mehta. See you if can get one.
And in India too, we don’t say the name of the baby until a year or so.
Finally all the best, your on your way to create your masterpiece.
    And I am following 😉.
Enjoy your holiday and keep up the journal.
